Women in Turkey

Hülya Çıtak overcoming the obstacles of being an entrepreneur.

With this new post our Turkish trainee wants to motivate every women entrepreneur!

Everything started as Hülya Çıtak decided to break down the prejudices of “women do not work” in the society. 19 years ago, she sold her mother’s jewelry and opened a workplace where garments are manufactured to show what women can do. It was an initial step in her path of being a successful businesswoman!

Now, 12.000 pieces of garments are manufactured every month with 4 women employees working at her workplace. She emphasizes that her sole aim was just to show the power of women and says: “In the past, there were not enough women entrepreneurs. Women did not have any role in the labor market. It was thought that women should not work or study. I wanted to prove what I can do, what I can achieve.”

Çıtak states that she had not enough equipment when she had first opened her workplace. As she earned more money, she could buy machines, and this increased her self-confidence as well. “I am always against the idea that women should focus on domestic work such as washing the dishes, cleaning or taking care of children.” she adds. “I have employed many women who are the bosses of their own business now.” she says proudly.

Even though there are more women in the labor market comparing to 19 years ago, we should accept that we need more women entreprenurs. We need more Hülya Çıtaks!
