AFAEMME presents results of the first phase of the YOUNG WOMEN AS JOB CREATORS project and launches the project's second phase

The Secretariat of the Union for the Mediterranean (UfM) held on 26-27 March 2014 at its headquarters in Barcelona, an international project-oriented conference under the title “Women’s Socio-Economic Empowerment: Projects for Progress”. As an operational result from the Third Union for the Mediterranean Ministerial Conference on Strengthening the Role of Women in the Society (Paris, 11 September 2013), the objective of the conference was to create a strong momentum for the women’s socio-economic empowerment in the region, and encourage the implementation of projects and initiatives in the field of gender affairs.

This international multi-stakeholder Conference brought together more than 200 representatives from 35 countries, namely governmental representatives, international development and cooperation agencies, international organizations dealing with gender equality, private sector and civil society representatives, as well as promoters of regional cooperation projects in the field of gender equality and women empowerment.

AFAEMME participated in the Conference by presenting results of the first phase of the UfM-labelled project "Young Women as Job Creators" and launching the project's second phase.

During the Conference, AFAEMME and the UfM awarded Ms. Luma Sukarieh, a young participant of the project's Women Entrepreneurship Days which took place last year in Jordan, for the best business idea which has been developed during the implementation of the project's first phase. The awarded business idea, GREEN GLASS, is about recycling glass waste in Jordan in order to better preserve the environment. An added value of the project is the will to employ young unemployed workforce and to allocate part of the company's profit to support orphanages.
